AIP-PMA conference success
The UK leg of this year's PMA Europe conferences, held in Droitwich in October, proved highly successful for PMA and its members, and also for the newly formed AIP (Association of Imaging Professionals) which enjoyed its inaugural gathering.
The conference sessions and a trade exhibition geared to cover both the retail side of the industry via PMA and image production professionals via AIP produced an exciting and extensive programme for delegates at the 2007 PMA Europe conferences.
AIP members who have transferred from the now superseded PPLA (Professional Photographic Laboratories Association), along with those potential members coming from companies involved in all aspects of imaging and image printing - all of which now qualify for membership - had their own strands of conference sessions covering fields of direct interest to them, while other sessions either related to the photo retail sector in particular or to the imaging industry in general.
The exhibition arena also catered for both aspects of the industry, with companies displaying products and services with emphasis on the different fields, or, in some cases, able to accommodate both aspects via their ranges.
Fujifilm was one company which straddled all aspects of imaging - Peter Hayward, head of the photofinishing business unit, commented that the real benefit of such an event was in being able to maintain contact with established customers across the industry, as well as developing new business opportunities.
In his welcoming speech, AIP/PMA UK director Nigel McNaught set the theme of the conference sessions as 'Future-proof your business'. “This concept covers all aspects of today's imaging business,” he said.
“It is not just a case of stocking and utilising the latest technology, but gearing customer approaches and relationships to ensure that everyone involved is benefiting from a wider understanding of the myriad opportunities which now present themselves.”
Taking up the notion of preparing for the future, conference speakers included John Henshall of EPI-Centre and Richard Worsley of The Tomorrow Project both looked at the application of the imaging industry to the general ongoing development of technology and techniques in our everyday lives.
Also looking ahead were business guru Glenn Omura and Skillset manager Pippa Walkley, who both outlined the needs and benefits of progressing business practices and attitudes in order to sustain the industry as it continues to accommodate the latest technical advances, along with WPS Media which provided delegates with an insight into making the most of their websites.
The hardware, software and consumables side of imaging was well covered with speakers from Epson, Canon and Hewlett-Packard, as well as fine art digital paper manufacturer Innova Art UK, along with Colour Confidence and QCI providing overviews of colour management and quality control.
Covering the retail side of the industry, speakers from Fujitsu, Lucidiom, 30-minute Photos, The PMA Retail Academy, McCurry Associates, DED and Whitech promoted different aspects of improving business on the high street, both in terms of how an outlet operates and how it relates to its customers. GfK, meanwhile, provided market analysis to help retailers ascertain the trends in consumer buying, which should assist in making individual business plans.
Altogether, a comprehensive programme was packed into two days, which included a gala dinner with various industry awards and the naming of Gerry Dingley, ex managing director of Pentax UK and now chairman of PIC, as the recipient of the Chris Swain Memorial Award for a lifetime of service to the photo industry.
The staging of this year's conference and trade show produced a very positive outlook for the imaging industry in general, and an optimistic mood for the companies within it.
“There is much happening in the imaging marketplace,” says McNaught, “and we appreciate the input of everyone who attended this year's event, all of which helps to structure both the PMA and the AIP as the support organisations most appropriate to the industry's needs.”
